Every second you film is backed up online, and nobody can delete it before the date you set.

RIPOUX stands for « Récupération Instantanée et Protection des Originaux par Upload eXterne »: instant recovery and protection of the originals by external upload.

ripoux.fr is for documenting protests. A phone films, cuts the video into segments of 2 to 3 seconds and sends them as it goes, encrypted. Whatever has been sent is safe, even if the phone is seized or destroyed. The footage is locked for a period you choose, up to 30 days: before that date, nobody can delete it.

How it fits together

Field phoneoh.gyFilms and sends. Cannot view or delete anything.
encrypted segments
Serverripoux.frKeeps unreadable files. Enforces the lock.
still encrypted
Your accountripoux.frDecrypts in your browser. Prepares, views, exports. Deletes only after the lock.

The phone that films has no account: it scanned a QR code and can only send. Everything that is viewed, shared or exported goes through your account.

Where to start

  1. Getting started: create an anonymous account, choose a passphrase, write down the recovery key.
  2. Trusted contacts: add at least one person who can rebuild your key.
  3. Security and codes: set the normal code and the duress code.
  4. New session: five settings, then a QR code.
  5. The field phone: filming, and keeping the recording from stopping.

During and after

  • Degraded network: how sending continues when the network is saturated.
  • Location: what is sent, to whom, and how to turn it off.
  • Field alert: warn your contacts from the phone.
  • Check-in: say you are fine after the protest, from the account or the phone.
  • Viewing a session: timeline, gaps, hashes, log.
  • Testimonies: write what happened, encrypted, signed and timestamped.
  • Legal export: an archive a third party can verify on their own.
  • Watch room: during the protest, who is filming, where, and the alerts to take on.
  • Incident files: gather the sessions of one incident on a common timeline.
  • Verifiable extracts: prove a few seconds without disclosing the rest, and check a proof without an account.

For collectives

  • Collectives: a space shared by a legal team, an observatory or a newsroom, created from your account, with members and admins.
  • Drop boxes: a public QR code so witnesses can film without an account.
  • Publishing a blurred copy: mask faces, publish a public page with the proof of its origin.
