Guide Collectives

Collectives

A collective brings together the sessions, drop boxes, incident files and publications of a group: legal team, observatory, newsroom. Each person keeps their own account and passphrase; nobody shares a password.

Creating a collective

  1. Sign in to your personal account.
  2. Open the menu of your space at the top right (My space), then Create or manage a collective. On a phone, it is at the top of the ☰ menu.
  3. Name the collective and, if you wish, give the name the other members will see you under.

You are its admin. The name of the collective and the names of its members are encrypted: the server cannot read them.

An account can create up to 5 collectives. When the operator closes registrations, no new one can be created.

Switching spaces

At the top right, the space switcher shows who you act for: My space, or the name of a collective (coloured border). On a phone, the name of the collective shows next to the logo, and the choice of space is at the top of the ☰ menu. Pick a collective to switch to it: the dashboard, the watch room, incident files, drop boxes and publications are then the collective's. A session created or filmed from the collective belongs to it.

Inside a collective, the personal pages leave the menu: trusted contacts, security and codes, check-in, my account. They are yours, not the collective's. To get back to them, pick My space.

The switcher also shows the number of unread notifications of each collective. The collective's notifications (alerts, contributions received…) also reach your phone if you turned notifications on in your own account.

Inviting someone

They need a ripoux.fr account (they can create one when opening the link).

  1. On the page of the collective, in Invite someone, choose their role: Member or Admin.
  2. Create an invitation link, then copy the link.
  3. Pass it on like a key: encrypted messenger, or in person. The link holds what opens the collective; the part after “#” never goes through the server.
  4. They open the link, sign in to their personal account, and Join the collective.

A link works once and expires after 7 days. Until it is used, you can cancel it. Each arrival shows in the member list.

Who can do what

Member Admin
Film for the collective, view, export yes yes
Extracts, testimonies, incident files, watch room yes yes
Drop boxes yes yes
Publish a blurred copy, withdraw it, choose its visibility no yes
Delete a session no yes
Invite, remove, make admin no yes
Rename or delete the collective no yes

A collective always keeps at least one admin: make someone else admin before leaving or becoming a member again.

Removing a member, leaving

An admin can remove a member: their access to the collective is cut at once, even if they were looking at it. Anyone can leave the collective from its page.

A limit to know: what someone already downloaded or exported stays with them, and the keys of the collective are not renewed when they leave. Remove without delay anyone who should no longer have access.

Deleting the collective

An admin can delete the collective: its sessions, drop boxes and publications disappear for all its members. As for a session, this is impossible while footage is locked.

Former collective accounts

Before, a collective account was created at registration and its members shared a passphrase. These accounts still work. To move to the new way:

  1. Sign in to the collective account with the shared passphrase, open Collective in the menu.
  2. Invite each person with their own account, at least one as Admin.
  3. In Former shared passphrase: Delete the shared passphrase. Nobody can sign in to the collective directly any more; people enter it from their own account.

What about trusted contacts?

A collective has no trusted contacts nor check-in codes: these are personal protections. A person can, however, add a collective as a trusted contact: switch to the collective, then open the invitation link they sent you. The members then see the sessions they share and their alerts.
